UNSUNG SINGERS

Joe Cerisano and Sandy Farina are the most prominent of a chorus of vocalists featured on the new “Hands Across America” theme song from EMI Records--but you wouldn’t know it from the back cover credits.

Though the multitude of musicians performing are individually credited, Cerisano and Farina, who make a living doing jingles and commercials, are lumped in with the other singers--and listed en masse as the “Voices of America.”

Said Hands Across America chief Ken Kragen: “The concept was that this should be a populist event, so it didn’t seem appropriate to credit any of the singers--it just wouldn’t be in keeping with the spirit of the event. (Cerisano and Farina) knew going in that this was going to be like a commercial for them, but that they would get plenty of credit after the event.”

Because the record doesn’t feature any “star” names, Kragen expects a slower chart climb than “We Are the World,” which at this time last year was in its 4th consecutive week at No. 1. But Kragen added: “I’m aiming for a Top 10 record by the time we get closer to May 25.”

The new Billboard chart has “Hands” stalled at No. 69--without a bullet.
