Central County : Long-Distance Dialing to Differ for 10,000

About 10,000 Orange and Garden Grove residents will have to change their dialing habits May 5 when Pacific Bell begins using AT&T; operators for operator-assisted long-distance calls.
Orange residents with 385, 634, 937 and 978 prefixes, as well as Garden Grove residents with 740, 744 and 750 prefixes, must dial “00” to contact an operator for help with long-distance calls, said Dave Carroll of Pacific Bell. Direct-dial and credit card long-distance calls will not be affected, he added.
The “O” operator will continue to handle local calls, defined by Pacific Bell as calls in the 714, 213 and 818 area codes, and parts of the 619 and 805 area codes.
Pacific Bell made the change so that it can now use AT&T; operators to handle long-distance calls. Carroll said the move will save his company about $23 million this year alone.
