The chief drug prosecutor for the Orange County district attorney is being transferred off the job.

William L. Evans must go, not because he bungled a case but because he bought a 34-foot pleasure boat in partnership with James D. Riddet, a prominent defense attorney in drug cases.

“We are dealing with appearances,” said Evans’ boss, Assistant Dist. Atty. Edgar A. Freeman.

The district attorney “had no concern” that the joint venture had compromised Evans, Freeman said.
