A courier for a check-cashing service was shot in the back and robbed of $85,000 in cash by a gunman who ambushed him outside the rear door of a bank in Pasadena on Friday.
Witnesses said the courier, Louis Baca, 20, of Big Ben’s Check Cashing Service, was shot without warning by a man who had been seen loitering earlier outside the back door of the Golden State Sanwa Bank in the 100 block of Lake Street.
The moment the courier fell, police were told, the suspect grabbed a backpack containing the money and sped away in a car that was found abandoned shortly afterward a few blocks from the bank. It had not been reported stolen, but officers said its ignition had been punched out.
Baca was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he was reported in fair condition after surgery to remove the bullet from his back.
