Newport-to-Ensenada Race Off to Slow Start
A fleet of 504 yachts set sail at noon Saturday in what appeared to be another slow Newport-to-Ensenada race.
The 5- to 8-knot south-southwesterly breeze sent the armada close reaching down the coast, with a few reaching offshore in hopes of picking up a westerly that would allow them to set the big spinnakers for the 125-mile run to the Baja California resort. There were no starting-line mishaps reported despite the crowding at the weather ends of the dual starting lines.
Unless weather conditions improve, the lead boats are not expected to arrive off the Ensenada breakwater before midmorning today. The race for first-to-finish in the 39th annual event is expected to be among a dozen multihulls (catamarans and trimarans) and a half-dozen ultra-light displacement monohull sleds.
The deadline for finishing is 10 a.m. Monday.
