Savings, Not Made Eligible for Derby, Romps to Victory in the Trial Stakes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Savings, a 3-year-old colt who wasn’t made eligible for the Triple Crown races, won the lackluster Kentucky Derby Trial Stakes Saturday at Churchill Downs before an opening-day crowd of 24,880.
It’s unlikely that any of the 13 horses that ran in the one-mile Trial will compete in the Kentucky Derby next Saturday.
Savings, who ran for a $30,000 claiming price in his first start at Oaklawn Park last year, paid $29.40 to win, finishing more than six lengths ahead of Trobio. Sumptious was third, and Regal Search ran fourth.
Glow, attempting to give trainer Woody Stephens his fourth straight win in the Trial, was never a factor and finished far back.
Diana Stable’s Savings, trained by Gary Hartlage and ridden by Patrick Johnson, came from about sixth place on the turn and looped the field to win.
