Thunderstorms battered some parts of the Midwest while other parts of the nation’s midsection had record-high temperatures. Heavy rain and wind gusts up to 45 m.p.h. were reported from Omaha to Nebraska City. Record-high temperatures were reported in Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana. In Tennessee, last week’s record-breaking cold gave way to record-breaking heat, as Chattanooga reached 91, shattering the old record of 88 degrees set in 1957. Lexington, Ky., had a record high of 86, breaking the 1938 record of 85, and Chicago broke a 1962 record of 86 when the mercury reached 87.
