The Dallas Cowboys gave backup quarterback Gary Hogeboom his wish Monday and traded him to the Indianapolis Colts.

In return, the Cowboys traded places with the Colts in the second round of today’s NFL draft and will later get another draft choice--the quality of which will depend on the playing time Hogeboom receives with the Colts this year.

Dallas will draft sixth in the second round, and Indianapolis chooses 20th. That gives the Cowboys two of the top 33 picks in the draft.

After being given a chance to lead the Cowboys in 1984, Hogeboom played sparingly last season. After Dallas’ elimination from the playoffs in 1985, Hogeboom asked Coach Tom Landry to trade him.

Both Indianapolis and Green Bay had expressed interest in Hogeboom, who tried out with the Colts.

The Colts earlier this month acquired the fourth pick in the draft from New Orleans with intentions of taking Purdue quarterback Jim Everett. However, the Houston Oilers apparently plan to take Everett with the third pick.

If Indianapolis does not draft a quarterback, Hogeboom will battle Mike Pagel for the starting job.

Hogeboom was with the Cowboys for six years, although he did not play in his first two seasons. He finished his Dallas career with 279 completions in 518 attempts, 13 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

His big chance came two seasons ago, when he won a training camp battle with Danny White and was awarded the starting role.
