At least 14 soldiers were killed and several wounded today when communist rebels ambushed a government convoy in the northern Philippines, the military operations center said.

The soldiers, riding in two jeeps, were pinned down by heavy gunfire from about 100 New People’s Army guerrillas at a remote village in Allacapan, Cagayan province, about 250 miles north of Manila. The official Philippine News Agency said military chief Gen. Fidel Ramos fired the local regional commander within hours after the attack.
