Irwindale : Clerk-Treasurer to Retire

Share

Margaret Barbosa, the longtime city clerk and treasurer who made an unsuccessful bid for a City Council seat April 8, has announced her retirement effective July 1.

In accepting her resignation, the City Council agreed to give Barbosa full retirement benefits even though she is two years younger than the eligible retirement age of 60 for public employees.

“Since I’m not quite 60, they gave me two years credit,” Barbosa said. “It was a very difficult decision for me to make. I love my little city.”

Barbosa, who was named city treasurer in 1958, will receive an annual stipend of $21,000, half her current salary. Barbosa, the wife of former Mayor Henry Barbosa, said she decided to retire before the April 8 election, in which she finished fifth in a race for three City Council seats.

“I had decided before the election that I would either be on the City Council or I would retire,” said the lifelong Irwindale resident. “I live just across the street from City Hall. If they need me, I can always come in and give them a hand.”
