Long Beach : Base Commander Leaving

Share

Capt. Kevin M. Healy, commander of the Long Beach Naval Station, has been reassigned to Honolulu as executive assistant to Adm. James Lyons, commander-in-chief of the Pacific Fleet.

Healy, 47, who took command here in January, 1985, said he will leave Long Beach May 29, about seven months earlier than expected because Lyons’ chief aide was recently promoted.

Replacing Healy will be Capt. Walter R. Heinecke, 46, who is being transferred from Lyons’ staff.

Healy said he has spent much of this assignment getting about $100 million in construction projects started so the station can better accommodate about 13,000 sailors now in Long Beach--and 4,000 more expected by 1990.

He has also been highly visible at City Hall and in the community, assisting the city with long-range planning and sitting as a director on local boards of the United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross and American Cancer Society.

“Long Beach is the best Navy town that I’ve ever been in,” said Healy, who was once stationed at 13 different bases in 11 years. “That’s because of their support for the military, their warmth and their concern.”
