West Los Angeles : Apartment Owners Convicted
- Share via
The owners of an apartment at 1537 Corinth Ave. have been convicted on seven misdemeanor counts related to rent gouging, according to City Atty. James Hahn.
Jeanne Mount and Melvyn Abramovitch, who do business as A & M Enterprises, were ordered to pay $11,200 in fines and penalty assessments as a result of the conviction.
Hahn said the charges against Mount and Abramovitch were based on a 1983 incident in which they evicted an elderly tenant who was paying a monthly rent of $179 and then re-rented the unit for $475 a month. To legally raise the rent, the owners would have had to spend a minimum of $10,000 on building renovations, which they did not do, Hahn said.
