The Centre City Development Corp. Friday approved spending $101,000 for overtime work aimed at completing construction of the Lyceum Theatre complex in time for the gala opening of the San Diego Repertory Theatre’s new season May 31.
The added expense carries no guarantee that work on the oft-delayed $7.6-million project will be done on schedule, according to Kathy Kalland, CCDC spokesman.
“Quilters,” the Rep’s inaugural production on the new stage, has been repeatedly postponed by construction problems.
CCDC also approved a $5,000 contract with a toxic waste consulting firm to determine the extent of contamination on a downtown block where a large redevelopment project recently was canceled.
Plans for the $36-million City Plaza project--on a block near Horton Plaza bounded by 1st Avenue and Market, Front and G streets--were dropped last month because of contract problems and possible toxic waste contamination of the site.
The current tenant, Super Plating Works, may have been dumping toxic wastes there for years, according to CCDC.
