A series of murals will be painted throughout the city as part of the Artist in the Parks and Other Places Program, a nine-week summer Youth Employment Training program designed to provide job experience to economically disadvantaged and/or handicapped youths ages 14 to 21.

“Any highly visible wall surface in Long Beach can be considered as a potential mural location,” according to Steve Lew, community arts coordinator for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. Residents intertested in participating in the “select a mural site project” may phone in their suggestions by Friday at (213) 432-5931.

Since the art program begin in 1982, more than 15 murals have been painted by participants in the project. The mural designs, which range from land and seascape paintings to Olympic marathon runners, are covered with an anti-graffiti coating to protect against vandalism.
