Distinguished L.B. City College Grad to Address Class
Melvin Salveson, a 1938 graduate of Long Beach City College who created the concept of Master Charge in the 1960s, has been chosen as this year’s commencement speaker. He will address more than 1,000 graduates at 58th annual commencement ceremonies beginning at 9:30 a.m. May 29 on the lawn in front of the college, 4901 E. Carson St.
After graduating from LBCC, Salveson received bachelor and master of science degees from UC Berkeley and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Later he earned a Ph.D. in business and economics from the University of Chicago.
Last year, Salveson was inducted into LBCC’S Hall of Fame. He is currently engaged in research and implementation of a new universal access card system, OneCard, which will handle such transactions as banking, health care, insurance, retail purchases and supermarket bills.
