The Tragedy at Central Library
We who belong to PEN, the international association of writers, are heartbroken by the devastation of the great downtown public library in a tragic fire. Many of us are authors of books destroyed in the conflagration that are integral parts of our very lives, soul-related as offspring. We affirm that a library is a hallowed place within our common culture. We offer our time, energy and resources for the task of rebuilding.
