Hurdler Roger Kingdom and quarter-miler Michael Franks, both rated No. 1 in the world last year, were upset in the Jesse Owens meet at Columbus, Ohio.
Jack Pierce, formerly of Morgan State, edged Kingdom in the 110-meter high hurdles, winning in 13.53 seconds.
Butch Reynolds, a sophomore at Ohio State, upset Franks in the 400 meters with a clocking of 45.36.
Jud Logan, American record-holder in the hammer throw at 265 feet 4 inches, won the event at 258-2.
