Nathan Robert Jerald, director of the San Diego office of the National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ) from 1965 to 1970 and an activist with several civil rights organizations, died Friday in his El Cajon home. He was 80 years old.

Jerald, originally a teacher and school principal from Springfield, Ill., became involved in the NCCJ in 1954 as associate director of the organization’s San Francisco chapter. He later served as director of its Baltimore chapter for nine years before coming to San Diego in 1965. During his tenure in San Diego, Jerald worked with San Diego Police to establish encounter groups between police officers and members of the black and Latino communities.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of El Cajon; daughters Judith Sackheim of Tokyo and Jacqueline Schneider of New York, and son Jonathan Jerald of San Diego.
