Dr. Clyde Martin, chief psychiatrist at the California Medical Facility at Vacaville, was named Tuesday as the new director of San Diego County’s Hillcrest mental hospital. County Chief Administrative Officer Norman Hickey said Martin will assume his new $81,286-a-year post on May 27. Martin’s appointment ends a nine-month search for a new director.

Martin, 53, is a certified mental health administrator. He is also a law school graduate, an ordained minister and has been a clinical professor of psychiatry. He earned a medical degree at the University of Kansas in 1958 and is a flight surgeon in the Air Force Reserve. Martin, who is married and has four children, was a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine and worked as a staff psychiatrist at Atascadero State Hospital.

He succeeds Harold Mavritte, the facility’s interim director since July. Mavritte is the clinical director for the Hillcrest hospital.
