The Palm Springs Angels remained in first place in the Southern Division of the California League by defeating the Ventura County Gulls, 10-5, Tuesday night in front of 304 fans.

The Gulls had swept three games from the first-place Angels last weekend in Ventura to pull within a half game of the top spot.

Gull pitching ace Todd Stottlemyre (4-2), who entered the game with an ERA of 1.39, allowed four runs in 2 innings. Tom Wasilewski replaced Stottlemyre and gave up a two-run home run to Kent Anderson on his first pitch.

Angel first baseman Ty Van Burkleo also homered off Wasilewski in the fifth.

Todd Eggertson (1-1) went six complete innings to gain the win for Palm Springs. He allowed only one earned run and struck out four. Mike Butler pitched the last three innings for the Angels.

Rob Ducey, Greg Myers and Luis Reyna each had two hits for the Gulls. Ken Kinnard and Myers tripled.

The teams play again tonight and tomorrow. The Angels’ William Fraser (1-0) will face David Wells (0-0) tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Gull Notes

Infielder Santiago Garcia, who has been on the disabled list with a broken finger, joined the Gulls on Tuesday. The Dominican Republic native hit .298 in 514 at-bats and had 25 stolen bases and 35 doubles at Florence of the South Atlantic League last season. Garcia made the league’s all-star team and was named a top prospect by Baseball America magazine. Although Garcia played shortstop last season, he will play second base for the Gulls, according to Manager Glenn Ezell.
