South Bay : Hospital District Grants

Share

Two nonprofit organizations will receive money from the South Bay Hospital District, which provides funds for public health programs in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach.

The district board gave a $3,000 grant to Project Heart Start, which holds cardiopulmonary resuscitation training classes at South Bay Hospital. An emergency grant of $2,500 was approved for the Hermosa Beach-based Community Center Rape Hotline, which uses volunteer counselors to help victims of rape and sexual assault. The grants will support both organizations for a year.

Philip Valera, district executive director, said the 24-hour hot line is having problems paying for its telephone answering service. “The grant will make them fairly secure in delivering services over the next 12 months,” he said.

Project Heart Start has trained more than 10,000 residents in CPR over the last 11 years, Valera said. He said both groups “offer important services to beach-area residents and make extensive use of volunteers.”
