Carson : Egan Pleads Innocent

Share

Carson Councilman Walter J. (Jake) Egan pleaded innocent this week to nine counts of mail fraud and two counts of interference with commerce by extortion that stemmed from his relationship with convicted political fixer W. Patrick Moriarty.

Egan was ordered by U.S. District Judge Ferdinand Fernandez to stand trial on the charges. A federal grand jury indictment accused the two-term councilman of accepting illegal campaign contributions in exchange for his support of a multimillion-dollar development that Moriarty was launching in Carson.

Egan’s attorney, Robert B. Gaunt, has said that Egan was a courier for $20,000 of the campaign money but did not use any of it himself, and did nothing wrong.
