Daniel Steven Jenkins, who is accused of killing a police detective several hours after the officer testified against him in a robbery trial, was sentenced Friday to the maximum eight years in state prison and fined $10,000 for the 1984 holdup of a North Hollywood movie theater manager.

Jenkins, 30, told San Fernando Superior Court Judge Bruce J. Sottile shortly before he was sentenced that he did not commit the robbery and did not receive a fair trial.

“I’ve been shackled like a slave and treated unfairly,” Jenkins said.

After he was sentenced, Jenkins told the judge that he does not intend to pay the fine “because I did not commit the crime.”

Motion Denied

Jenkins’ attorney, Howard R. Price, was denied a motion to disqualify the San Fernando branch of the district attorney’s office from participating in the sentencing. Price argued that anonymous written threats made to Deputy Dist. Atty. Maureen Duffy Lewis had prejudiced the entire office against his client.

Sottile also denied Price’s request for a new trial. Price said he would immediately appeal the decision.

A jury convicted Jenkins Nov. 1 of one count of robbery with the use of a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon. The charges were in connection with the robbery at gunpoint of $4,600 from theater manager George Carpenter on Oct. 14, 1984.

The day before the jury reached its verdict, Los Angeles Police Detective Thomas C. Williams was gunned down while picking up his 6-year-old son from a Canoga Park church child care center. Williams had testified against Jenkins on the robbery charge earlier that day.

Jenkins and five other suspects face murder and conspiracy charges in the Williams slaying. Besides robbery, Jenkins has been charged with the shooting last July 4 of theater manager Carpenter. Carpenter was shot four times by his assailant but survived the attack and later testified in the robbery trial against Jenkins.
