Reagan Reassures Youths on Social Security Benefits

President Reagan, in an address televised to students across America, told young people today that the Social Security system is solvent enough to assure them of benefits when they become senior citizens.

The President spoke in the Rose Garden to about 140 students from John A. Holmes High School in Edenton, N.C., who were invited to the White House to hear Reagan’s address. Over the last three years, the school has boosted its record on the Scholastic Achievement Test by 130 points, to above the national average.

Reagan’s address was carried by satellite to schools throughout the country. It was also broadcast overseas to an estimated audience of 150,000 students by the Armed Forces Network.

Answering a student’s question, Reagan said the Social Security system was in trouble when he came into office in 1981 but was fixed by an overhaul two years later.
