SDSU Bidding for NCAA West Regional Tournament
San Diego State is among four leading candidates to host an NCAA Western regional baseball tournament next week, Coach Jim Dietz said Tuesday.
Dietz said SDSU has bid $14,000, the third highest among the four bidders. According to Dietz, a published report in Tucson said Stanford has bid $27,000, Arizona $20,000 and UCLA $12,000.
Last weekend, SDSU qualified for the NCAA tournament by winning the Western Athletic Conference. UCLA is the Pacific 10 Southern Conference champion, Stanford finished second and Arizona third. Only the conference winner earns an automatic NCAA berth, but Stanford was given an at-large berth Tuesday.
One or two West Coast teams are expected to be host sites in the eight-regional, 40-team tournament. Last year, there were two Western hosts. Four regionals will have four teams and four regionals will have six teams.
The Aztecs may raise their bid before the regional sites and pairings are finalized Monday, Dietz said.
