Cudahy : Gambling Vote Up in Air

Share

With the outcome of a gambling referendum still in doubt, City Clerk Gerald Caton is expected to tally the last 10 absentee ballots at 9 this morning. At the end of balloting Tuesday, 288 voters favored letting card club gambling remain legal while 286 wanted the games of chance outlawed.

When questions were raised about the legitimacy of six of the absentee ballots, officials decided to delay counting them until the signatures could be verified against county voter registration records, Caton said. Card clubs have been legal in Cudahy since 1982. But in the six years since, only one casino--the Silver Saddle--has opened for business.
