Girl Hurt in Explosion A teen-age Irvine girl remained hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday after being hit by shrapnel when a homemade pipe bomb exploded Tuesday night, police said. Investigators said the girl and a teen-age boy had approached the crudely made device--a pipe stuffed with black powder and a fuse--after it failed to detonate and were showered with metal and debris when it went off unexpectedly in an underground drain pipe on Sheridan Street. Both were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana where the boy was treated for minor injuries. Neither of the injured--said to be 14 and 15 years old--was identified by police, because the two may have been involved in building the bomb.
