FAIRFAX, Va. — The lives of baby eagles hatching in treetops outside the nation’s capital are threatened by a bird of another sort: low-flying aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration is warning pilots who use airports in the Washington region to fly at about 2,000 feet above the Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge. A $5,000 fine may be imposed on errant aviators.
The birds are on the endangered species list, but some planes skim 200 feet above trees in southeastern Fairfax County, where six eagles live.
