The Thousand Oaks chapter of the American Assn. of University Women has voted by more than 2 to 1 to endorse Measure C, the controversial ballot question on building a regional performing arts center with city redevelopment money, it was announced Thursday.

City voters will cast ballots June 3 on a plan to use an estimated $22.3 million in redevelopment funds to build two theaters, one with 1,800 seats, one with 299 seats, an outdoor amphitheater of 250 seats and a museum, and to assist the Conejo Valley Unified School District in building three high-school theaters.

At a Thousand Oaks news conference, officials of the group said the center would accommodate professional performances and draw big crowds, producing profits to help offset losses incurred when small community groups use it.

“This community has a good track record of being fiscally prudent,” said Carolyn Kopp, the group’s president.

The Thousand Oaks chapter also endorsed the cultural center in 1984 when it first went before voters.
