Bottles Believed to Hold Nitro to Be Detonated
Los Angeles police planned to explode two bottles of what they believed to be crystallizing nitroglycerin late Thursday after a man took the bottles into the West Valley Division station in Reseda, police said.
The unidentified man said he was cleaning out an abandoned storage space at his Chatsworth business when he found an old Army ammunition case with two bottles of the material inside, Sgt. Steve Frye said.
About 8:30 p.m., the man took the case into the station at 19020 Vanowen St., where officers looked at the bottles, thought that they might contain nitro and called the bomb squad, Frye said. Bomb squad officers found that the material was forming crystals and therefore unstable and too dangerous to move, Frye said. They called for a bomb disposal device, Frye said.
The bottles were taken to a helicopter pad behind the station. Officers blocked off Kittridge Street as a precaution.
