When firefighters had extinguished the flames at a Santa Ana stereo and auto parts store, they found the two bodies: Store owner Liem Khac Dinh, 23, and clerk Thap Nguyen, 20, had died in the blaze.

Later, police said, they found that the men had set the fire themselves, and that Dinh recently had insured the store at 638 S. Harbor Blvd. for $175,000.

Dinh’s body, with the shop keys in a pocket, was found in the front of the store, and Nguyen’s body was found near the back, Santa Ana Fire Department spokeswoman Sharon Frank said.

Authorities said the men had been spreading flammable liquid, and the vapors had built. When the liquid was ignited, the store exploded.

“Torches found on or near the body of Nguyen indicated that he had ignited the fire,” Frank said. “All entries or exits to the building had been found to have been secured from the inside prior to the fire.”

Four other stores in the small shopping center were also gutted. Dinh had apparently taken out the insurance policy in the last several months, police said.
