NCAA Softball Western Regional : Fullerton Qualifies for College World Series With 1-0 Victory

Cal State Fullerton, the No. 1-ranked softball team in the country, advanced to the College World Series Saturday with a 1-0 victory over 14th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona at Titan Field. The Titans beat the Broncos, 2-0, Friday night in the first game of the best-of-three Division I Western Regional series.

Fullerton (52-9-1) opens College World Series play in Omaha, Neb., Wednesday evening against Cal State Long Beach. The 49ers, Northwest Regional champion, advanced with 4-1 and 2-1 victories over Fresno State this weekend. Six other teams will join Fullerton and Long Beach in the College World Series. The Titans have reached the World Series six of the last seven seasons.

Junior Connie Clark threw a two-hit shutout Saturday for Fullerton, walking none and striking out 13. Clark is 17-2 with an earned-run average of 0.21. Pomona (36-19-1) starter Rhonda Wheatley (31-17-1) allowed 10 hits. The Titans scored the game’s only run in the top of the fifth inning. After Fullerton loaded the bases with no outs, Titan center fielder Rina Foster hit into a home-to-first double play, with Terri Oberg scoring from second.
