Development in Harbor a Concern
Although the Harbor area is a long way from the rest of Los Angeles city, we share with other communities the desire to save our neighborhoods from the encroachment of unbridled development. Few would say that Wilmington is overdeveloped, at least not to the degree that we see in West Los Angeles and along Ventura Boulevard.
Does that mean that the building industry special interests expect us to sit back and wait until our neighborhoods are further destroyed and our streets, sewers, police and educational services are overwhelmed before we put the brakes on the building frenzy?
I say no! That’s why so many Harbor-area residents are working hard to gather petition signatures for the Initiative for Reasonable Limits on Commercial Building and Traffic Growth. It may be our last chance to retain some part of the quality of life that has made Los Angeles famous.
The quality of life in Wilmington has already been diminished by overdevelopment of apartment complexes. Just recently the community witnessed demolition of seven homes in one week for apartment construction.
Wilmington residents look with concern on similar, uncontrolled commercial development.
