Downey : District OKs Pool Plan

Share

Representing a far less ambitious plan than originally envisioned, an agreement to jointly build and operate an Olympic-size swimming pool in Downey was unanimously approved by the Downey Unified School District Board of Trustees.

The agreement calls for the district and city to build a swimming pool at the northwest corner of Downey High School, where a baseball diamond is now located. The pool will replace one that has been in use at the school since the 1930s. The old pool will be demolished and paved over. The Downey City Council is expected to vote on the agreement next week.

Although initial negotiations called for the two agencies to share costs equally, the agreement now provides for the district to pledge almost $300,000 toward the cost of building the pool. The district will also pay 75% of the maintenance costs with the city picking up the rest.

The city will contribute $500,000 from a state recreation grant. A local service club has also contributed $100,000 toward the pool’s construction.
