Orange County Roundup : Adoption Guild Tennis Benefit Begins Saturday
Elimination matches for the 25th annual Adoption Guild Doubles Tennis Tournament will be held this weekend at seven tennis clubs in Newport Beach, Irvine and Costa Mesa, with the finals scheduled for May 31-June 1 at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
The tournament, which benefits the Holy Family Services of Orange County, begins Saturday at the Balboa Bay Club, John Wayne Tennis Club, Newport Beach Tennis Club, Racquet Club of Irvine, Mesa Verde Tennis Club, Newport Marriott and Palisades Tennis Club.
More than 700 men and women’s teams from California, including UC Irvine’s Bruce Man Son Hing and Darren Yates, are expected to enter the tournament, which will feature nine divisions.
An anonymous donor has given a $5,000 purse for winners and runners-up in a new men’s championship division. It is the first time that prize money has been offered.
Arthur Ashe, a former U.S. Davis Cup team captain and Wimbledon champion, will be featured at a tennis clinic Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Nordstrom in South Coast Plaza. The clinic is sponsored by Le Coq Sportif sportswear.
Ashe will demonstrate the new Matchmaster tennis rebound device, which was developed in Australia and is marketed in the United States by Masterlife Inc. Some members of the audience will be able to join Ashe in a hitting drill.
After the clinic, Ashe will sign autographs. A drawing will be held for door prizes. The clinic is free and the public is invited. For more information, call 549-8300, ext. 1215.
UC Irvine senior Jeff Campbell has been selected UCI’s Lauds & Laurels Outstanding Athlete of the Year for 1985-86. Campbell, who attended University High School, was named NCAA water polo Player of the Year after leading the Anteaters to the national championship game, and scoring 79 goals for the season.
Senior Stuart Weinberger has been chosen UCI’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Weinberger, a graduate of Granada Hills High School, has a 3.92 grade-point average our of a possible 4.0 in physics and is a four-year member of the UCI crew.
The Anteaters also have two students--junior track and field/cross-country member Jennifer Abraham and junior basketball player Mike Hess--who were selected Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Abraham, from Tustin, won the 1985 PCAA cross-country championship and holds the UCI track record for 3,000 meters. She has a 3.69 GPA in English. Hess, from Corona del Mar, averaged 5.3 points and had 88 assists for the Anteater basketball team. He has a 3.70 GPA in social ecology.
Bill Barham of Marrietta, Ga., an incoming freshman at Cal State Fullerton, will join two Titan gymnasts at the USA Championships in Indianapolis on June 19-22. The championships are open to amateurs but not restricted to college athletes.
The Titan qualifiers are junior Matt Stelling and freshman Eli Rodriguez.
Barham qualified for the championships at the Western Regionals at UCLA last weekend.
The South Coast Mite AA hockey team of Costa Mesa will participate in the Mite AA Hockey Tournament, which will be held this weekend at the Norwalk Ice Arena.
The championship game is scheduled for Monday at noon. Representatives from the Los Angeles Kings will referee and present trophies after the game.
