Indianapolis Colts linebacker Duane Bickett is facing assault charges for his role in a midnight brawl in which an off-duty officer of the Glendale Police Dept. was injured.

Bickett, 23, a former USC player, was one of at least eight men who jumped out of a limousine on May 9 and fought with the police officer at a Glendale intersection, police said.

In the brief fight, Officer David J. Higgins, 22, was punched, kicked and knocked down, police said. Higgins suffered a broken nose, a black eye and other minor injuries, according to police reports.

The names of the other men involved in the incident were not released by police.

Higgins, who joined the department in 1985, was not acting as a police officer when the fight occurred, Loop said.

The incident is under investigation.

Bickett, an All-American at outside linebacker, was the Colts’ first draft pick in 1985. He attended Glendale High School, where he played basketball, football and baseball before entering USC in 1981.
