Man Tries to Swim Across Creek, Dies
A man who told his girlfriend he was sure he could swim across Ballona Creek drowned Saturday about halfway across the channel, officials said.
The man, identified only as a 26-year-old Los Angeles resident until relatives could be notified, was dead on arrival at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles County lifeguards said.
A boater on the creek near the Marina del Rey harbor mouth saw the man in trouble and called lifeguards, who recovered his body and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived. The man apparently had been drinking, officials said.
