Capistrano Beach : Pedestrian Footbridge to Doheny Beach Open
A pedestrian footbridge now spans Coast Highway and the Santa Fe Railway tracks, ending at the sand in the community of Capistrano Beach.
“This is another answer to the transportation problems of south Orange County,” said Supervisor Thomas F. Riley, who cut a ribbon during the brief ceremony Friday that opened the bridge. “In the past, it was always sickening to read in the papers that another pedestrian had been killed crossing the highway here. This might mark the end to such tragedies.”
California Highway Patrol statistics show that four people died in the area of the new bridge in the last two years.
The $300,000 structure was built by developers of a complex of motels, health spas and time-share condominiums on the inland side of Coast Highway with approval of the California Department of Transportation and the railway.
It provides access to a portion of Doheny State Beach.
