A former insurance salesman, convicted in Los Angeles federal court on charges of participating in a scheme to bilk United Insurance Co. of America out of more than $1 million, was sentenced to five years in prison, placed on five years probation and ordered to make restitution of $70,000. U.S. District Judge James M. Ideman said Gerges Soliman, 45, of Culver City, committed perjury in his trial and did not now appear to be repentant. Soliman was the last of six United employees convicted in the scheme, which involved continued payments on elapsed insurance policies and then submitting forged death certificates.
