The Region : San Diego Mayor Pays Back Funds to City

Acting San Diego Mayor Ed Struiksma has reimbursed the city $815.70 for expenses he claimed on 1984 business trips to the East Coast and San Antonio. The city auditor had requested the payment, because Struiksma was unable to provide receipts for the expenses. Questions about Struiksma’s city expense forms prompted him to withdraw from the city’s mayoral primary race in late January, after the San Diego County district attorney’s office announced that it would investigate the matter to see if criminal prosecution was warranted. Although Dist. Atty. Edwin Miller announced earlier this month that there was insufficient evidence to justify criminal charges against Struiksma, he urged City Auditor Ed Ryan to press for additional documentation or reimbursement.
