Local News in Brief : Burbank Police Group Opposes Bradley Bid

Share

The Burbank Police Officers Assn. on Tuesday announced its opposition to the endorsement of Mayor Tom Bradley’s bid for governor by its state affiliate, the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs.

Len Doran, president of the Burbank group, said a “large majority” of the 133-member union voted to oppose the state organization’s endorsement because Bradley refused to take a position on the confirmation of California Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird.

Bradley said March 25 that he would neither support nor oppose Bird’s November reelection bid because he thinks partisan politics should be kept out of the judiciary.

Doran said, “While the endorsement of Mayor Bradley by COPS is recognized as a labor endorsement by a labor organization, the majority of the membership of BPOA feel that Mayor Bradley does not represent the political philosophy of the average police officer.”

He added that Bradley’s position on Bird “not only fails to address the issue in a direct manner, but is an obvious attempt to avoid the issue entirely.”

“Considering the voting record of Ms. Bird, Mayor Bradley’s position is not acceptable,” Doran said.
