Julia Asmus, an active volunteer and resident of Bell Gardens since 1936, was recognized by the City Council as Outstanding Older American for 1986. A proclamation was presented to Asmus, who has served in various organizations including the Bell Gardens Coordinating Council and the Bell Gardens High School site council.

Larry Muniz, a senior at Norwalk High School, placed fourth in the 1986 Hal Connolly Scholarship Athlete Award. Muniz submitted an essay, titled “How Athletics Has Helped Me Cope With My Disability,” to the Governor’s Committee for Employment of the Handicapped, which awarded Muniz a bronze medallion.

Lakewood homeowner Bruce Williams is the citywide grand prize winner of the sixth annual Lakewood Beautiful awards competition. Volunteers judged more than 400 homes for quality of property maintenance and selected four other grand prize winners, representing different parts of the city, 37 first-place winners and 113 Distinguished Recognition winners. Council members will recognize the award recipients at a reception dinner June 22.

At the Whittier Meals on Wheels annual awards luncheon, volunteers Elaine McCarthy and Marge Neville were honored for giving more than 3,000 hours of service to the program in the past year. Eight volunteers were honored for putting in 1,000 hours of service: Alice Butcher, Joe Chittum, Ardell Drollinger, Claudine Galezewski, Jacque Greyson, Camilla Jorgensen, Ann Kruse and Dianne Pellissier. Since the group formed 15 years ago, more than 717,000 meals have been delivered to Whittier area senior citizens and handicapped residents.

Alejandro Huerta, 11, a fifth grader at George Washington Carver Elementary School in Compton, won first place in a cartoon-drawing contest for the recent Hands Across America fund-raising event. Alejandro drew a map of the United States depicting hungry children in America. The student of Thelma Johnson’s class won a bicycle from J. C. Penney, which sponsored the contest.
