Long Beach : Filing Set for Council Seat
Filing begins today for candidates seeking to fill the 6th District council seat vacated by James H. Wilson two weeks ago. The filing period for the Aug. 26 special election ends June 19.
Wilson, a 16-year council veteran, resigned May 16, the day he was sentenced to three years in prison. He was convicted on 21 counts of mail fraud for accepting about $54,000 from a fireworks manufacturer in exchange for his vote.
Five candidates have already said they intend to run for the office.
They are Frank Berry, president of the local chapter of the NAACP; John Rambo, a phone company community relations representative and an Olympic bronze medalist in the high jump; Clarence Smith, a city parks and recreation official; medical secretary Dezebee Tyrone Miles, who ran unsuccessfully in the 1982 race for the seat, and Compton city employee Hudena James.
