Coalition of S.F. Black Churches to Take Political, Social Stands
The newly formed San Francisco Religious Council, representing more than 200 black churches, will take political as well as social stands, spokesmen say.
The objective of the new organization, which represents combined congregations of about 30,000, will be to press for advancement in jobs, housing and educations, the city’s black ministers said Tuesday.
The council has already issued a list of preferences on 12 political candidates and 20 state and local initiatives, the Rev. Martin Grizzell said.
The council is also planning a major forum of politicians, civil rights groups and clergy for August or September, the Rev. Rance Whiteside said.
The council includes the major black religious groups in San Francisco: Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, the Baptist Ministers’ Conference, the Methodist Federation, the Baptists Ministers’ Brotherhood, the Bayview Baptists Ministers Alliance and the Church of God in Christ Alliance.
