Ice Cream Addicts

Baskin-Robbins’ new ice cream, International Creams, to be marketed this summer, will have an “alcohol content too low to be regulated,” according to the company’s chief executive (“Baskin Adds Zip to Its Line, Laces Entries With Liqueur,” May 15).

That is unfortunate!

Alcohol is a drug. It has been part of the overall drug problem that society faces. Even the smallest amount is dangerous to anyone who is allergic to alcohol. And as the liqueur-laced ice cream will enhance the taste so as to make one want to eat more, it adds to the problem. How will our children be protected from becoming addicted? Government agencies charged with safeguarding people’s health need to insist on labeling the ice cream and restricting sales to children.
