California Elections : THE BOARD OF EQUALIZATION
A chance to win perhaps the cushiest job up for grabs this year lured a field of 11 candidates for major party nominations for a seat on the state Board of Equalization.
The board has a reputation as a comfortable political refuge, paying $82,000 a year. It is the only elected tax appeals board in the nation and its seats are rarely open. This race, for the board’s 4th District, was set off by the retirement after 28 years of Richard Nevins.
Vying for the Democratic nomination--tantamount to November victory since the district is 2 to 1 Democratic--are Los Angeles County Tax Assessor Alexander H. Pope, state Sen. Paul B. Carpenter, former state Sen. Nate Holden of Los Angeles, business tax examiner Joseph E. O’Green, tax consultant David L. Welsh, appraiser Mike Greenspan and businesswoman Helen Banos Howard.
Competing for the Republican nod are land developer Gordon E. Rudolph and H. Stanley Jones, part-time Inglewood city treasurer.
