The Private Industry Council is seeking about 400 people for employment as correctional officers at the new state prison on Otay Mesa. A one-week pre-employment training program to prepare applicants for the state civil service exam, which is required for employment as a corrections officer, will be provided.

Applicants, who must be either earning less than $3,250 per year, or be unemployed or recently laid off, will be coached in reading, writing and interviewing and will be tested for eyesight, blood pressure and physical agility.

The council will recruit 1,000 applicants to be narrowed down to 400 who match the state’s criteria for employment. While there are certain requirements for employment as a correctional officer, “there are great benefits including pay of approximately $25,000 the first year,” said Project Supervisor Tomas Martinez.

The prison will be partially operational by December and will house 2,400 inmates when completed.

Orientations will be provided several times each week at the council’s Employment and Training Center at 1664 Industrial Blvd., Chula Vista.
