The San Diego Historical Society Foundation has received a $50,000 grant to purchase computer systems. The grant, awarded by the James Irvine Foundation, will enable the society to modernize its membership, accounting and editorial work.

The computer system is an example of the possibilities of applying modern technology to cultural organizations, society Executive Director Richard Esparza said.

The society has used the grant to purchase five personal computers, Esparza said. The computers, which will be used for administrative work rather than collection management, will cut mailing costs, expand membership and development programs, and make work on the society’s publications more efficient. Most of the collection management is already computerized, according to Esparza.

The grant is the second that the society has received from the prestigious San Francisco-based James Irvine Foundation in the last few years.
