Gov. George Deukmejian today rebuffed protests over plans to send 60 California Air National Guardsmen to Central America, saying “there’s absolutely no difficulty” with the two-week training mission.

“There is absolutely no reason for us to have a major concern about the safety of the members of the National Guard who are assigned to that particular mission,” Deukmejian said. He said members were going voluntarily and were not involved “in any area where there is any open warfare.”
