Mission Viejo : Dog, Owner Drive Off Attacking Coyote Pack

Share

A pack of coyotes attacked a pet dog Thursday morning but was driven off by the dog’s owner and the dog: a 100-pound Doberman pinscher.

George Webster said he was walking his dog, Cody, near open fields and a golf course at Oso and Marguerite parkways about 8 a.m.

“I turned Cody loose and he was about 100 feet away from me in some tall grass and brush when I heard a lot of commotion,” Webster said. “I ran up there, yelling and making noise and waving a heavy chain leash, and got close enough to see four or five coyotes going for Cody, who seemed to be doing pretty well himself.”

Webster’s charge sent the coyotes fleeing into the brush.

“My main concern was that some little schoolchildren were waiting for their bus on a corner not far away,” Webster said. “I went and warned them, and I also told their bus driver that there were coyotes in the neighborhood. I’ve seen signs of them there before, too.”

Cody, on advice from county Animal Shelter authorities, was taken to a veterinarian for rabies booster shots and antibiotic injections and will be held in quarantine at home for 30 days.

“He’ll be OK,” Webster said. “He’s got some puncture wounds in a place where it might hurt for a few days when he sits down.”

The coyotes? Webster didn’t get a chance to see what Cody did to them.
